Our Coaches
Experts in their respective fields, our coaches possess the highest accreditations—and perhaps as importantly, practice what they preach on their own time.
Scott K. FERGUSON, Ph.D.
Scott Ferguson (Co-Founder & Coach) holds a Ph.D. in Physiology and an M.S. in Exercise Physiology, and is an internationally recognized expert in aerospace and exercise physiology, with a special focus on oxygen transport, muscular fatigue, and performance in extreme environments. With over 40 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and 1800+ citations, Scott's research has significantly advanced our understanding of skeletal muscle metabolic control and vascular function. He has collaborated extensively with world-renowned physiologists, including Dr. Andrew M. Jones (physiological consultant for Nike's "Breaking-2" and “Breaking-4” athlete project) and Dr. David C. Poole (a pioneer in oxygen transport and muscle energetics).
Scott's groundbreaking early work was the first to demonstrate that dietary nitrate supplementation (such as beetroot juice) selectively enhances blood flow to fast-twitch muscles during exercise, explaining why such supplements enhance performance in some athletes but not all. Currently, Scott is an Assistant Professor at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, where he directs the Integrative Aerospace and Exercise Physiology (IAEP) Laboratory, investigating human exercise performance under various environmental stressors, including high stress situations and hypoxia.
Scott has a strong interest in exploring aeromedical factors in aviation, specifically focusing on the development of cardiovascular disease among professional pilots. His work aims to identify lifestyle interventions capable of preventing or reversing cardiovascular health issues in pilots. These interventions are critical for extending the healthspan of pilots and other professionals, enabling them to safely and effectively perform their duties over a longer period and maintain their professional privileges.
As a coach and mentor, Scott is committed to translating cutting-edge scientific insights into practical training guidance, mentoring athletes at all levels and guiding students in research settings. He currently mentors Ph.D. and undergraduate students in his laboratory, further reflecting his dedication to education and professional development. Scott is passionate about education, aviation, outdoor exploration, and advocating for science.

George Cedric Bieker, M.Ed.
As a full-time mountain guide and aspiring alpinist, George (co-founder and coach) brings a unique perspective to the Summation team. Spending more than half the year in the mountains allows George to apply the Occam's razor of practicality to the field of physiology research.
George was born and raised in the Ozark Mountains of Northwest Arkansas. He found climbing in his 20's during his undergraduate training, after which his life quickly changed. Over the next decade, he would unrelentingly pursue his climbing passions, which would lead him to guide clients and climb in mountains throughout the world, earn a masters degree in education, and develop a keen understanding of nutrition, holistic development, cosmology, and mindfulness.
